PROMPT #486 – THE SHADOW OF THE MOON

The second part of our exploration of the eclipse which happened recently concerns the MOON. The response to the SUN poems was very strong and we thank you for your diligence. But now, we stand in the shadow of the moon. Write a moon based verse.

WALT’S POEM:

BENEATH A BROAD, BRIGHT MOON

Night had fallen,
and any sullen mood I might have fostered
had found its rest in the evening sands.
The warmth of the day lingered
as wanton fingers traced along the
titillated flesh of that beautiful and willing
(although scared and nervous) woman
who had held my fascination
and seized my heart. We began that
tactile meander with shaking hands
as they wandered and we explored one another.
Tender caresses that unharnessed
our sleeping libidos. In the heated throes
of passion, it was an uncharted course.
Navigating by the stars above,
love came home in the shimmer
of a broad bright moon. It felt so right,
just like the first time, every night.
And my hands still quiver from that sight,
the beginning of passion in the bright moonlight.

MARIE’S POEM

Humanity, Eclipsed

A Syrian friend
flees the supper table with
her whole family

leaving home-cooked meal
to decay in silence, as
bombs scream her story.

While bombs shake her house
in Ukraine, a sweet young child
runs out the front door,

glares at a gutless
foe, shakes her fist, and bellows,
“You cannot scare me!”

A gentle woman
from Afghanistan stumbles
as she tries to bolt

away from the bombs
in her path. She breaks her nose.
But her lungs still breathe.

More friends from Ukraine
had no light, no heat for months.
This, in my friend’s words:

“Life is divided
into before and after
war came to our house.”

In shadows, evil
slinks across the globe beneath
our sentinel moon.

© Marie Elena Good, 2024

These are just a few of the stories of war-weary refugee friends of mine. These few don’t express but an infinitesimal spec of the havoc war wreaked on our planet in the time it took me to pen this poem. What we humans are willing to do to fellow humans is unspeakably horrific.

    MOONLIGHT IN THE DESERT

The desert moon, a jewel thrown high,
sends streams of grace across the sky,
and as it soars it touches land,
spreading its glow on rocks and sand.

    It makes of night a silver day;
its gleam exceeds the the Milky Way
as poorwills cast their tender spell:
“The sky is calm, all will be well.”

The moon rolls on throughout the night,
quite high, quite bright, quite full of light,
and as it shines, from gold to blue,
the desert moon reminds me of you.

    Moonlit Romance

    The hazy full moon
rested in the somber blue sky
    over the reflective lake
    edged by mountain
    and pine silhouettes.

    Passages

    The night moon sits, lingering,

    bright but hidden

    behind the evening clouds.

    How soon,

    ‘twas only noon

    a few minutes ago,

    the sun shining, its glow

    large with dreams, with hope.

The day moon looked on then too,

    light gray within the blue,

    faint but present,

an augury of things to come,

too easily ignored by most of us,

    less foreshadow, more omen.

    When the final moment arrives,

    as it assuredly must,

filtered by the end’s dark dust,

yet with a light brighter than

    the moon and  stars,

it will be the middle of the night.

    No matter the time.

One will know that the past

    ended yesterday,

    and in the end,

    our lives are simply stories,

    and the dark of night

    comes all too soon.

    So much

    for man.

    The world

    will proceed

    with its plan

WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE MOON

    grabbing our lofty petals
    of random romantic thoughts
as we eye her beautiful rise
    into awaiting night skies
she has a pull on ocean tides
    her presence never hides
    maybe our waves
    of blissful hope
    find their way
    to her
    perhaps she is the one
    who silently calls to us
    opening our longing hearts
    to connect to her light
    that we might
    unite
    on any given
    clear night
    to a love
    who is also waiting
    wanting
    feeling just as drawn
    to her shining
    silent and mysterious orb
    just to absorb
    all she shines down
    allowing a transformation of sorts
    a cohorts
    of innocence
    a beam of beauty
    against the dark
    a spark
    inviting
    our best shine
    right back
    as her single silence
    speaks to the heart
    in us all
    in that way
    she becomes
    all
    until morning comes
    and brightens
    her glow away
    yet she’ll return
    soon
    that moon
    another night
    will stay

IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON

I stand in the shadow of the moon,
within a greying light of fleeting thought,
    grasping remnants of pride.

    Shall I lay aside, despondent
    shreds of mine own respair?
Succumb to the kingly beast of despair?

    Should I let another take—
    absquatulate, with the fragments
    of mine own dignity?

I stand in the vicinity of a fateful moon,
amidst a rising tide of gleeful hope,
    rebuff—the eclipse of near victory.

    I unsheathe my ripened sword
    with sharpened wit and say,
    a knight, knows no darkness!
