A short Japanese style poem, similar to haiku in structure: three lines with 17 or fewer total “syllables”, however, senryû tend to be about human foibles while haiku tend to be about nature, and senryû are often cynical or darkly humorous and satiric while haiku are serious.

All three are good, but the rice wine fulfils the cynical suggestion!
Agreed, Viv.
Without evolution
ancient myth of creation
defies belief.

Discernment needed

I think these are excellent.
sad commentary and well written
Wonderful, Viv. Really love that second one!
I’m longsighted and shortsighted;
My perspective seeks
The middle
Now I need a prescription for the middle as well. Trifocals, here I come!
Been there, done that, wearing them!
“Saki to me.” This way madness lies. Wonderful and entertaining examples, Walt.

they proffer poetic forms
for their amusement.

Poetic form – a crutch
when poetic muse on strike.
It spurs us on.
Ah, yes; quite so.
They offer me an image, a phrase–but rarely poetry. How lovely.
Or maybe I’m just hard of hearing to their whispers.
I meant this for William’s poem above. Forms do give me a crutch, to hope I am writing poetry and not disjointed lines of prose
Well, anything to entertain our muses!

Enjoyed this, I did.
Just in time for Halloween. Even though I just heard a TV spot that today’s children would prefer money to candy bars!
oh dear. William, you’re a master of short forms
The Haunted Bus Stop
The bus is coming!
I must hurry to the stop
Oh no! It is full!
Here comes another bus
I manage to squeeze inside
where is it going?
This bus is speeding
when will it come to a stop?
This is the wrong bus.
quick! I must get off
I shove my way to the door
We are not slowing down
When will this bus stop?
Does it have a destination?
I want to go home!
Wonderful!
poor rider
Great job on this form, Marian. Perfect tale.
GROWTH PROVERB
Human foibles
springs forth bitter leaves,
asperity of trees dwells in roots
Benjamin Thomas
I like this one…wisdom herein.
Agreed.
so much truth. bitterness doesn’t bring healthy fruit
falling in love is
oftentimes more like plunging
down the rabbit hole.

blinded by the light

your heart is hollow
love scooped out leaves empty shell
just like a pumpkin

I love these, especially the third.
I too love the third. The image will stay with me
These are right on the money, Susan. I love the last two.
CROSSROADS
Take time to shine,
sing, waltz in the light,
or succumb to beasts of darkness
Benjamin Thomas
Amen to those thoughts.
when I’m depressed, I sing. It helps change my mood. . .
You have no idea how timely this is for me. Love it!
Glad to hear it! 😊

Pure beauty surrounds
it’s rich beyond expressing
still she’ll spill these words.

There’s beauty in the words
Thank you, Benjamin.
Just a thought-out-loud…Sometimes…they/words can feel so lack-luster and the awe of moments can be so difficult to capture in a way that does it justice. Sigh…
Amen to that.

Love it! So wise.

PROVERB FOR VICTORY
Conquer the chaos,
wrench it’s wretched neck,
then usher in rays of dawn.
Benjamin Thomas
I love this, especially that second line.
They Are Coming
They come in costume
Seeking candy and comfort
As they did in life
The little twist at the end brings me up short. Well put.
😊
Love your title. This reminds me of an old sci-fi movie. They’re coming, and they’re hungry!
Thanks, Benjamin. I was thinking in B-movie mode.
EVERGREEN DREAM
Wish me life evergreen,

Lovely.
Great imagery
Thx
Or, until yews fade the scene. (Just being silly.)

resting in the valley,
