Today we’re presenting the RYŪKA.
The RYŪKA is an untitled poem usually consisting of four units
(often treated as separate stand alone lines when romanized or translated)
standardly with the following pattern of onji (sounds, syllables):
8-8-8-6,
where as, the Japanese Tanka is 5-7-5-7-7.
There are other variations of Ryūka such as
7-5-8-6 or
5-5-8-6 or
longer Ryūka with 8-8-8-8-8-8-8…-6.
Let’s write RYŪKA!
WALT’S EXAMPLE:
serenity lives
beneath the bright sun
lovers find strength in her warmth; light
caresses touch their hearts

Dear God, we have become our sins
Our disdain and hatred blind us
We are drowning in selfishness
We’ve bowed to a reprobate mind
Another prophesy come true
No longer do we look to You
Still we need You more than ever
Dear God, we need Your forgiveness
We need Your guidance and wisdom
We know we are not deserving
But we will not survive ourselves
Please, God, we need intervention
Dear God, can You forgive
Amen. I keep asking for mercy for our nation.

Camera’s capture the image
Some good; others not
The viewfinder changes the view
The memory remains

(8,8,8,6)
The Matter is not the matter
Just a title used to disguise
The real intent is deception
Wake up and smell the lies

Island life is the best
descending from the high gardens
denim clad farmer comes behind
dusty yellow tiller spinning
clods mixed with possibility
A beauty, Pat!
awake with a smile after dream
four people sit at a table
we are both children and adults
the children do not speak
I remember those days
The borders are snowy white
with Sweet Alyssum,
and delicate ice berg roses
frilly scabiosa
That on days of wilting heat,
unforgiving sun
winter visits for a moment
memories of rime frost
I love, “memories of rime frost”.
